Pre-hispanic History

Bolivia has a diverse archaeological legacy, from cultures such as Chiripa, Tiwanaku and Inca and of course the present-day Aymara and Quechua peoples living in the region. The significant archaeological discoveries in the lowlands make Bolivia an important area for pre-hispanic archaeological sits.

  • Our Programs

    MILLENARY TIWANAKU
    DURATION: 7 HOURS
Leave the city of La Paz for Tiwanaku, close to Desaguadero on the border with Peru. A 90-minute drive takes us to the archaeological site of Tiwanaku, one of Latin America’s most famous historical sites. Tiwanaku was established as a culture around 500 years before the rise of the Incas, and the empire lasted for several centuries. The ceremonial site you will visit is part of a citadel that is yet to be explored. The pre-Inca ruins of Tiwanaku are a splendid example of one of America’s most important cultures. Some of the well-preserved examples of the Tiwanaku culture that you will see and learn about on the site are the Gateway of the Sun, the Pyramid of Akapana, the Temple of Kalasasaya and the Semi-subterranean Temple, and you will have the chance to visit the archaeological site’s museum to see pieces of unmeasurable wealth and understand with your guide’s help the relation between Tiwanaku and other empires and connections with the world of that time. In the afternoon you will have the chance to see the remains of the Pumapunku Pyramid, one of Tiwanaku’s four most prized structures. Many of the stones used to build the pyramid weigh over 500 tonnes, and were brought from quarries over 8 km away. These stones have been cut perfectly and have withstood the ravages of the elements. Your guide will introduce you to the different theories surrounding the site before taking you out to the fields to appreciate the Inca raised-bed fields – “sukakollos”.

    ANCIENT COPACABANA
    OVERNIGHT: ISLAND OF THE SUN
    DURATION: 2 DAYS

    DAY 1
After breakfast in La Paz travel for 3½ hours to the town of Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titikaka close to the border with Peru. This is Bolivia’s most important pilgrimage site whose guardian is the Dark Virgin of Lake Titikaka. Visitors come from around the world to ask for favours from her and leave her gifts. On arrival visit the church and the town. Take our private boat from Copacabana to the Island of the Moon to visit the Temple of the Sun Virgins “Iñak Uyu, Lunch and then take a boat to the south end of the Island of the Sun to visit the archaeological site of Pilkokaina. This palace was built as temporary residence for the first Inca. Have a look at the type of construction and its location. Return on the boat to the port at Yumani to climb the Inca Steps; over 200 steps built by the Incas to reach the northern part of the island passing the Fountain of Eternal Youth, where the water in the three drinking fountains from Inca times is believed to bestow eternal youth on whoever drinks from them.

    DAY 2
Get up early the next day to watch the sun rise, have breakfast and enjoy the Inca Gardens where you can see traditional Andean agricultural systems (terraces) and marvel at the majestic Andes mountain range and “Lake Titikaka”. We will go by boat to the north side of the island to visit the Chincana (labyrinth) which is one of the main remains of the Inca culture in Bolivia. It is a series of corridors with trapezoid niches leading to interior patios, and is thought to be a ceremonial and religious site. Close to the Chincana is the Sacred Rock from where the first Incas are said to have sprung. Return to Copacabana to have lunch and in the afternoon visit the archaeological site of the Horca del Inca, or Inti Watana, which means “the place where the sun is tethered”. This is an astronomical observatory that is thought to date back to the pre-Inca Chiripa culture. Return to La Paz or carry on to Puno.
NB: You can walk from Pilkokaina to the hotel (about 1 hour).

    INCALLAJTA
    DURATION: 10 HOURS
142 km from the city of Cochabamba lies the archaeological site of Incallajta at 2950 m.a.s.l. Incallajta means Inca Village and in its heyday it was a religious centre, military fort and political centre established to keep the tribes from the lowlands from invading the area. Incallajta is one of the main vestiges of the Inca culture in Bolivia.

    SAMAIPATA
    DURATION: 8 HOURS
This programme includes a visit to the Fuerte de Samaipata archaeological site, recently designated as one of the world’s Cultural Heritage Sites and considered one of the most important sites from the Chane Culture. Our tour will include walks and a visit to the village, and at the end of the afternoon we return to Santa Cruz.

THE HYDRAULIC CULTURE OF THE MOXOS PEOPLE
    DURATION: 10 HOURS
Go to the Trinidad Airport early in the morning to fly in a single-engine plane to Los Llanos de Moxos. We will fly over amazing hydraulic constructions built by the Mojeños – embankments, canals, raised fields, lagoons and dikes – all built by hand hundreds of years before Christ. This archaeological wonder dates back 3000 to 5000 years when the people built thousands of kilometres of water systems to enable them to farm intensively.

    MYSTERIES OF TITIKAKA
LA PAZ – PARITI – QUEWAYA – LA PAZ
    DURATION: 10 HOURS

Return to Huatajata to have trout for lunch before heading back to La Paz or Copacabana.

  • Inca Trails Hard

    YUNGA CRUZ TRAIL
    DURATION: 5 DAYS
One of the most exciting but difficult of the Inca trails, this trek takes us from an altitude of 4,500 to 1,500 meters above sea lev
A pre-Columbian trail dominated by the presence of Illimani (6,480m); the trail crosses the entire mountain range and descends into the subtropical Yungas region. Enjoy breath-taking sceneries whilst walking past extensive coca leaf plantations, vegetable and fruit-producing areas. The trail is one of the best preserved pre-Hispanic trails in Bolivia. You will be sure to enjoy a variety of ecosystems, from the high mountain scenery down to the green forest.

    DAY 1
Leaving La Paz, we go south of the city heading towards the guardian mountain of the city, Illimani. As we approach the massif, it becomes more and more impressive. We arrive to Chuñavi mid-afternoon and set up our tents. The porters will join us to prepare the expedition for the next day.

    DAY 2
Observe a different ecosystem commencing with flowers and birds such as eagles, hawks, vultures and hummingbirds along the route. We need to reach the pass at 4,300m on the hill of Khala Ciudad (Stone City) where an incredible view of the Cordillera Real will await us if the weather is good. On the way we will also observe different native plants, characteristic of this inter Andean valley. We will then set up camp.

    DAY 3
On the way we will observe flora, orchids, tree ferns, gymnosperm of European pine, birds and mosquitoes in this ideal ecosystem for nature lovers. We will walk around Laguna Kasiri and then hike up in order to reach the pass at 4,200m, from where we start to descend until we come to Cerro Yunga Cruz, a good place for setting up camp.

    DAY 4
The vegetation becomes thicker and the temperature increases. The path will get wider and we will observe the deep depressions of this humid area during the early season when few people have passed through. A machete is a useful piece of equipment since the vegetation might obstruct our way. From this point we continue to the right of the hill and start climbing down and to camp in Durasnuni.

    DAY 5
After an easy trek we will arrive at the road into the village of Sikilini. We will find good viewpoints as well as terraced coca leaf plantations. From this point our trail will soon turn into a dirt track down to the village of Chulumani (Capital of the South Yungas section) and have time to wander around. After lunch we will drive for around 3 ½ hours back to La Paz.
