La Paz Highlights
LA PAZ HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 1 LA PAZ
El Alto Airport is located roughly 14 km from the city centre with look-out points set along the length of the main route providing exceptional views of the city and the snow-capped mountain chain of the Cordillera Real. Transfer to the hotel. Free day.

DAY 2 LA PAZ
After breakfast we will discover the city of La Paz starting with a walk through the ‘Witches’ Market’, where you can see different ingredients used in age-old ceremonies and rituals, then we will visit the city’s main sites: the San Francisco Church, museums (Jaen street) and continue our tour as far as the Plaza Murillo, where the Legislative and Government Palaces are found. Later we will go through residential neighbourhoods to the Valley of the Moon located in the south part of the city.

DAY 3 LA PAZ - COROICO
After breakfast we will drive to the small town of Coroico located in the subtropical area north of La Paz, surrounded by numerous coffee, bananas, citrus fruits and coca plantations. The 3-hour journey down to the Yungas passes through dramatic changing landscapes. This offers a complete vision of the ecological strata that exist in the region. You will be captivated by panoramic views of singular beauty, with the majesty of peaks that reach as high as 4,700 m, contrasting with the 1,700 m found upon arrival in Coroico. After savouring a tropical lunch we will visit the outskirts of this community.

The following morning, after a typical breakfast we will walk to Uchumani from which the Yungas valleys divide into north and south. In the afternoon after lunch we will visit the village of Santa Barbara and the natural hot springs of Vagante. In the evening we return to the city of La Paz.

DAY 4 LA PAZ- TIWANAKU
Early departure from the city of La Paz and travel to Tiwanaku. We will make a short stop in Laja, where the city of La Paz was first founded. Later we will come to the archaeological site of Tiwanaku, where incomparable examples of this culture can be appreciated: the Gateway of the Sun, the Pyramid of Akapana, Temple of Kalasasaya and the Semi-subterranean Temple. There will also be a visit to this archaeological site’s museum, and the tour includes a walk through the village of Tiwanaku to visit the church, where pieces of incalculable historical-cultural value can be observed. After lunch we move on to Puma Punku and the “Sukacollos” (raised fields).

DAY 1 LA PAZ
The airport of La Paz is located roughly 14 km from the city centre with viewing points set along the length of the main route providing exceptional views of the city and the snow-capped mountain chain of the Cordillera Real. We will discover the city of La Paz by visiting the city’s main sites: the San Francisco Church, museums (Jaen street) and continue our tour as far as the Plaza Murillo, where the Legislative and Government Palaces and walk through the ‘Witches’ Market’, where you can see different ingredients used in age-old ceremonies and ritual, hear about religious beliefs and myths, visit one of the “Kallawayas” (traditional healers) and take part in a ritual and have your luck read using coca leaves. Later we will go through residential neighbourhoods to the Valley of the Moon, an area of striking natural geological formations located in the south part of the city.

DAY 2 TIWANAKU – LAKE TITIKAKA
After breakfast leave the city of La Paz for Bolivia’s most famous archaeological site, Tiwanaku, which is one of the oldest pre-Colombian cultures. Visit the pre-Inca city once the centre of the Tiwanaku culture, Semi-Subterranean Template, the Pyramid of Akapana, the Kalasasaya temple, the Gateway to the Sun and the museums. We will also visit the community of Laja, where the city of La Paz was founded, to try homemade unleavened bread. In the afternoon we drive to Lake Titikaka and cross the Lake to the Island of the Sun where we will have dinner and stay overnight.

DAY 3 TITIKAKA LAKE – ISLAND OF THE SUN
Early in the morning we visit the Palace of Pilcocaina and after a walk across the Island of the Sun, local people will show us the art of fishing and how farming has developed on the Island of the Sun since pre-Inca times. After that, local people will be waiting for us on the Island of the Moon with a traditional lunch called an “Apthapi”. Transfer to La Paz.

Day 4 SUCRE
In the morning transfer to the airport to fly to Sucre. At the arrival, transfer to Hotel and accommodation. In the morning we visit the look-out point and the Recoleta monastery, the Cathedral, the Mercedes Museum, several churches, the House of Liberty. After lunch we will get a feel for the city and wander around the streets. Later in the afternoon we will explore the beautiful General Cemetery where young children offer their services as guides to explain who is laid to rest in the mausoleums.

Day 5 SUCRE (Sunday only)
After breakfast drive to Tarabuco, a cultural and traditional town where is possible to find textiles of unsurpassable quality and texture, as well as appreciating a culture that remains very much alive.

After breakfast and before driving to Potosí, visit “Cal Orco” in the quarry of the National Cement Factory where footprints of prehistoric animals (150 different species) were found, and the “Dinosaur tracks of Calancha” where 80 footprints have been identified as from the second period. Finally, as a complement, visit the “Cretaceous Park” to walk around and see some model dinosaurs. In the afternoon drive to Potosí, walk around the city and visit the 'Ingenio de San Marcos', a converted silver refinery.

Day 7 POTOSÍ - UYUNI
After breakfast, we visit the "miners market" and in the Cerro Rico de Potosí visit a mine nearby where all the characteristics of mining are explained and we can talk about the various steps of this arduous work. In the afternoon we visit the “Casa de la Moneda” (Royal Mint) known as the 'Escorial of America'. Later go by car to Uyuni seeing marvellous views out over the highlands. Dinner and night walk.

Day 8 UYUNI
In the daytime we will enjoy the salt flats whose salt crust covers over 12,000 km², and see the lagoons (‘eyes’), blocks and mountains of salt. We will also visit Inkahuasi Island, from where you have a panoramic view of the salt flats, and walk through the Cactus Valley. Return to hot

Day 9 LAGUNA COLORADA
After breakfast, leave the Uyuni Salt Flats for our new destination Laguna Colorada (the Red Lagoon), on the way we cross near of some other lagoons - Cañapa, Hedionda and Chiarcota. We will walk across the Siloli Dessert to see the Arbol de Piedra – Stone Tree. Arrive at the Red Lagoon.

Day 10 SOL DE MAÑANA
Very early visit Sol de Mañana and Polques hot springs, later the Green Lagoon; on the way we will see the rocks of Dali, the geysers and other natural marvels. On the way spectacular views of the Licancabur Volcano.

Day 11 SAN CRISTOBAL – UYUNI
After breakfast and passing through the towns of Culpina, San Cristóbal and VilaVila, arrive in Uyuni. From here you can go on to the Sajama National Park, the Bolivian Amazon, La Paz or Argentina. -

DAY 1 PUNO - COPACABANA
Pick-up from hotel in Puno, and then drive to the border to change to a Bolivian vehicle; arrive in Copacabana town in Bolivia; here we do a walking tour of the town, have lunch and visit the church and some important Inca archaeological in the afternoon.

DAY 2 COPACABANA - ISLAND OF THE SUN
Early in the morning we transfer from Copacabana to the Island of the Moon, where we visit the Iñak Uyu Palace; then we go by boat to the Island of the Sun where we will visit the Pilcocaina Palace, en route we can see the development of the farming on the Island of the Sun since Inca times. After that, we visit the stairs and the sacred fountain, and then we go to a traditional restaurant where we have a lunch. In the afternoon, we will enjoy the sunset.

DAY 3 ISLAND OF THE SUN-COPACABANA
At a convenient time transfer from the Island of the Sun to Copacabana by private boat. Once we arrive explore the town, visiting the Stations of the Cross, the market and after lunch visit the church and some important Inca archaeological sites.

DAY 6 LA PAZ – RURRENABAQUE
Early in the morning transfer to the airport and take a flight to Rurrenabaque. This is a fabulous opportunity to see the Andes mountain range and have a panoramic view of the Amazon rivers and forests. Your guide will be waiting to transfer you from Rurrenabaque airport to Chalalán. To get to Chalalán you will take a boat up the River Beni to the Chalalán Ecolodge. The trip is a great way to see the Bala Canyon and your first encounter with the Madidi rainforest continuing your boat journey on to the River Tuichi. On the way you'll see different animals and birds and get a feel for the spectacular landscape of the Bolivian Amazon. After a short walk along the Paraba path you will stop at a viewing point where you can see the beautiful landscape across Lake Chalalán, mountains and Madidi rainforest. Your guide will explain which plants are used for construction, hardwoods, palms and the traditional and sustainable use of natural resources. Also, your guide will talk about the park, the Chalalán Ecolodge and the community. You will then return to the lake to go on a canoe ride along the shores of Lake Chalalán, where you will be able to enjoy the sunset and see monkeys, birds, insects, bats, etc. Return to the Ecolodge for a snack. Night trip by canoe to see amphibians, nocturnal birds, fish-eating bats and caimans easily spotted because of their glowing eyes.

You will have a buffet breakfast in the dining room. On your second day you may talk to your guide about changing the time depending on your specific interests. Morning walk along the Tapacare path or another of similar length where you can see and learn about the forest and the wildlife surrounding you. Optional themes: natural interpretation of the forest, natural history, ecological processes, medicinal plants and hardwood trees, animal behaviour and bird and mammal watching. After lunch relax in a hammock or swim in Lake Chalalán. Short walk along one of the theme paths. Return to the Ecolodge and choose from the following optional activities: Handicrafts, canoe trip, videos about the community and the Madidi National Park.

Buffet breakfast in the Ecolodge and then a walk along the Jaguar or Wichi path; you can choose not to do this trip, and the trip can be tailored to what you want to see.

At a convenient time we will be transfer by boat from Chalalán to Rurrenabaque, transfer to the airport, to take the regular flight to La Paz.

We begin our trip crossing the Uyuni Salt Flats, seeing the Mountains of Salt, Eyes of the Salt Flats, Salt Blocks, and Fish Island.

After breakfast, leave the Uyuni Salt Flats for our new destination Laguna Colorada (the Red Lagoon), on the way we cross near of some other lagoons - Cañapa, Hedionda and Chiarcota. We will walk across the Siloli Dessert to see the Arbol de Piedra – Tree of Stone. Arrive at the Red Lagoon.

DAY 1 ARICA
In the morning you will be able to see Arica’s most interesting sites. Then we will continue towards Putre, crossing the valley of Azapa and visiting the geoglyphs and the local museum. From km 12 you will see the majestic valley spread out before you before we enter Lluta. On the way you will see the Candelabra Cactus and the Pukara of Copaquilla before we have lunch in Zapahuira. In the afternoon we will visit the village of Socoroma before we arrive at our hotel in Putre.

DAY 2 PUTRE
We leave very early for the Lauca National Park, where we will visit the caves, the Mirador (viewing point) of Chucuyo, the village of Chucuyo, community of Parinacota, the impressive Mirador (viewing point) of Cotacotani, Lake Chungará and the Payachata volcanoes. After a packed lunch we will go to the Chungara border point and continue our journey towards Tambo Quemado on the Bolivian border. After this we will continue on to the Sajama National Park and arrive at our accommodation in Tomarapi.

In the morning after breakfast, we will visit the craft centre in the village of Caripe, where garments are made using alpaca wool. A family from the area will give us an explanation of how the community farms llamas and alpacas. During the tour we will go through queñua forests and see the different flora and fauna found in the Sajama National Park, such as vicuñas and the Suri (Andean ostrich). We will visit the church of Sajama and continue our journey to the geysers where we will have a meal with the community. Later, on our return to Tomarapi, we will take a walk to the queñua forest, arriving finally at the village of Tomarapi where dinner will be served around a bonfire.

DAY 4 SAJAMA
Our morning begins with a traditional breakfast in Tomarapi and a visit to the local church, after which we will learn about local Aymara traditions and ways of life. On the return trip to La Paz we will visit Curahuara de Carangas, known as the Sistine Chapel of Bolivia. Finally we will arrive back at our hotel in La Paz.
