LA PAZ – LIVING CULTURE AND MARVELLOUS CITY
DURATION: FULL DAY
La Paz nestled in a natural depression and guarded over by snow-capped Illimani towering over the city at over 6000 m. La Paz is famous for its breath-taking altitude and at over 3000 metres above sea level its topography can be challenging for some. Set out early to explore the art and culture of La Paz; the old quarters of the city house narrow streets, balconies, churches and museums that hark back to colonial times when Spanish and indigenous influences fused to give rise to the baroque mestizo style found in La Paz and around the country. Have a delicious lunch in an old house surrounded by art and Andean music.
TIWANAKU UNESCO HERITAGE
DURATION: 8 HOURS
Leave early for Tiwanaku with an expert on archaeology who will teach us everything we want to know about this fascinating culture recognised as one of America’s most important. Tiwanaku is accredited as a World Heritage Site and is on the Qapacñan Circuit. Walk through the archaeological site to the ceremonial area of Puma Punku, around the village and out onto the Highland plain to see the “sukakollos”, a traditional farming system. At the end of the afternoon return to La Paz to see an exhibition of paintings by famous Bolivian artists.
SUCRE AND POTOSÍ THE COLONIAL HERITAGE
DURATION: 2 DAYS
DAY 1 SUCRE
Sucre is one of Bolivia’s most beautiful cities and declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Arrive at the hotel in a colonial building with many pieces of furniture dating from colonial times. After settling in tour the streets of Sucre to discover houses with inside patios, fountains and over 200 doors from the colonial period, have a typical lunch and visit the San Felipe de Neri museum and several churches.
DAY 2 POTOSÍ
After an early breakfast leave for Potosí, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, which rose to fame during colonial times; it is said that thousands of Europeans inhabited the city which was a hotspot of luxury and elegance. Potosí was the largest mining centre on the continent and colonial vestiges can be seen in the winding streets and museums that are our destination for the day. Visit the Royal Mint (Casa de la Moneda), the miners’ market and museums to see colonial art through the paintings of such painters as Melchor Pérez de Holguín. Your hotel is a fine example of Potosí’s colonial past where you will be surrounded by paintings, ornaments and other details to take you back in history.
SAMAIPATA ARQUEOLOGICAL SITE
DURATION: 8 HOURS
Samaipata, declared Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO, is an archaeological site from the Chane and Inca periods a 3-hour drive from the city of Santa Cruz. See the remains of these cultures at a ceremonial site with some of the largest petroglyphs in the world. Return to Santa Cruz at the end of the day.JESUIT MISSIONS
DURATION: 5 DAYS
DAY 1 SANTA CRUZ – CONCEPCIÓN
After breakfast travel to the region of “Chiquitos” just outside Santa Cruz to visit the Jesuit Missions, registered by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage Site. These churches were built by the Jesuits where music and art was used to evangelise the indigenous peoples. The music and art of the missions are still alive and thriving in the villages. After a 3-hour drive from Santa Cruz visit San Javier the first mission built in 1691; this was a test run before the other missions were built as the Jesuits did not just build churches but were also urban planners. Continue on to Concepción.
DAY 2 CONCEPCIÓN
Early in the morning visit Concepción, one of the most important churches in the area. Built by the Jesuits and designed by Father Mark Schmidt this church was constructed between 1747 and 1752. The interior paintings done by evangelised indigenous artists have been preserved and are a fabulous example of a fusion of indigenous and religious knowledge that gave rise to a unique building style.
In the afternoon visit the Museum of Religious Art to look at unfinished pieces of artwork, old paintings and information about the materials and techniques used. Like in the other villages in Chiquitos the knowledge brought by the Jesuits is still very much alive and kicking in Concepción; baroque mestizo music permeates the air and we will hear canticles and a small concert put on by Concepción’s children playing the violin, cello and flutes.
DAY 3 SAN IGNACIO
In the morning we will leave for San Ignacio. This village is an excellent example of the baroque mestizo architectural style, as seen in the structure of the doorways and other characteristics. Along the way your guide will give you a good explanation of the social and cultural characteristics of the local people and the influence that the Jesuits had on their lives. In the evening we will have dinner accompanied by Renaissance Music.
01 OVERNIGHT IN SAN IGNACIO
DAY 4
After breakfast leave for the Mission Circuit to visit San Miguel, San Rafael and Santa Ana and the outlying countryside of San Ignacio in the afternoon. The communities where these churches are have been turned into centres where classical, mainly baroque, music plays a key part in the lives of the inhabitants.
01 OVERNIGHT IN SAN IGNACIO
DAY 5
Return to have lunch in Santa Cruz and enjoy a free afternoon.

Inca Trails Hard
YUNGA CRUZ TRAIL
DURATION: 5 DAYS
One of the most exciting but difficult of the Inca trails, this trek takes us from an altitude of 4,500 to 1,500 meters above sea lev
A pre-Columbian trail dominated by the presence of Illimani (6,480m); the trail crosses the entire mountain range and descends into the subtropical Yungas region. Enjoy breath-taking sceneries whilst walking past extensive coca leaf plantations, vegetable and fruit-producing areas. The trail is one of the best preserved pre-Hispanic trails in Bolivia. You will be sure to enjoy a variety of ecosystems, from the high mountain scenery down to the green forest.
DAY 1
Leaving La Paz, we go south of the city heading towards the guardian mountain of the city, Illimani. As we approach the massif, it becomes more and more impressive. We arrive to Chuñavi mid-afternoon and set up our tents. The porters will join us to prepare the expedition for the next day.
DAY 2
Observe a different ecosystem commencing with flowers and birds such as eagles, hawks, vultures and hummingbirds along the route. We need to reach the pass at 4,300m on the hill of Khala Ciudad (Stone City) where an incredible view of the Cordillera Real will await us if the weather is good. On the way we will also observe different native plants, characteristic of this inter Andean valley. We will then set up camp.DAY 3
On the way we will observe flora, orchids, tree ferns, gymnosperm of European pine, birds and mosquitoes in this ideal ecosystem for nature lovers. We will walk around Laguna Kasiri and then hike up in order to reach the pass at 4,200m, from where we start to descend until we come to Cerro Yunga Cruz, a good place for setting up camp.
DAY 4
The vegetation becomes thicker and the temperature increases. The path will get wider and we will observe the deep depressions of this humid area during the early season when few people have passed through. A machete is a useful piece of equipment since the vegetation might obstruct our way. From this point we continue to the right of the hill and start climbing down and to camp in Durasnuni.
DAY 5
After an easy trek we will arrive at the road into the village of Sikilini. We will find good viewpoints as well as terraced coca leaf plantations. From this point our trail will soon turn into a dirt track down to the village of Chulumani (Capital of the South Yungas section) and have time to wander around. After lunch we will drive for around 3 ½ hours back to La Paz. -
